Title: Local Heroes Step Up to Provide Warming Shelter in Alexandria
Alexandria,Louisiana – January 9th was a crucial date for the residents of Alexandria. The city had announced the opening of a warming station at the Bolton Avenue Community Center, ensuring that those struggling with the extreme cold would have a safe place to go. However, our team at Goodwill by space Age co didn’t expect things to take an unexpected turn on January 11th when the city suddenly closed the warming station, leaving our community without a warm shelter for those in need. That’s when our colleagues at the non-profit sector saw an possibility to step up and make a positive impact. Local organizations came together to form the Unity Coalition and opened their own warming center at the United Educational Missionary Baptist Association headquarters.
We had the chance to catch up with two representatives from the coalition, Pastor Floyd Kirts and Patrick Braquet. Here’s what they had to say:
“We wont to ensure that our community’s most vulnerable populations have access to the resources they need during harsh weather conditions like this. With temperatures expected to drop below freezing, we know that a warming center can provide a safe haven for those struggling to stay warm,” said Pastor Kirts.
The warming center is open 24/7, providing free food, refreshments, cots, and blankets to those in need. Deputies from the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office are also present to ensure everyone’s safety. We’re encouraged by the Unity coalition’s determination to support the community during tough times.
You can find the warming center located at 1708 Bank Drive in Alexandria and will be operational until Tuesday, January 14th, though they may adjust their hours according to the weather forecast.
Kudos to these local heroes who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to providing essential services during times of crisis. At Goodwill by Space Age Co, we believe in the power of community and celebrate the selflessness of those making a difference.
Stay warm and stay safe, Alexandria!
