FEMA extends public assistance deadline for North Carolinians impacted by Helene

RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) – FEMA has granted North Carolina local governments and certain nonprofits an extension to apply for public assistance to help with Helene recovery.

The extension is now until February 6, 2025, and comes at Governor Roy Cooper’s request.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety says public assistance provides grants to government agencies and certain types of private non-profit organizations, including houses of worship.

Government agencies, eligible private non-profits, and houses of worship can apply for public assistance grants here.

After submitting the request, the department says FEMA and North Carolina Emergency Management officials will review the documentation and contact the organization.

The department says 39 counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians are eligible for debris removal and emergency protective measures. This work is funded at 100% by FEMA through March 27, 2025.

All counties are also eligible for the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

Additionally, 28 counties and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians are eligible for permanent work that can repair or place roads and bridges, water and waste treatment facilities, public buildings like fire stations and city buildings, as well as utilities, parks, and other community facilities.

The department says these projects must be completed within 18 months after the emergency declaration.

Helene hit North Carolina in late September as a tropical storm. Crews from across the country, including Eastern Carolina, went to the western part of the state to help with recovery and rescue efforts.
