Sonoma Raceway ride-along event raising thousands for local nonprofits

More than $8,000 was raised over the two-day drifting event in Sonoma.

The largest drifting event in the United States was held Dec. 7-8 at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, raising more than $8,000 for local nonprofit organizations that serve families and children, according to organizers.

The 13th annual Winter Jam was put on by Sonoma Raceway and benefits Speedway Children’s Charities.

More than 360 professional and amateur drivers participated in the event. The drivers offered ride-alongs to help Speedway Children’s Charities and expose more people to the world of drifting, raceway Communications Director Brandy Falconer said.

The $8,740 raised was through the sale of $20 wristbands which allowed participants unlimited weekend ride-alongs, according to Falconer.

Proceeds directly benefited the Sonoma chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities.

“We are overwhelmed by the generosity of our participants and the dedication of our volunteers. The funds raised will make a significant impact on the lives of children and families in Sonoma County,” Courtney Kiser, director of Speedway Children’s Charities Sonoma Chapter, said in a news release from Sonoma Raceway.

During a Dec. 9 reception at Sonoma Raceway, the Sonoma chapter distributed $184,000 in grants to 40 youth-focused nonprofits, the organization said.

Since its inception in 2001, the Sonoma chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities has distributed over $6.8 million to qualified local youth groups.
