Charleston County reopens application period for nonprofit funding program

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Charleston County leaders are giving local nonprofits another chance to apply for financial support.

The county has reopened the application period for its State Accommodations Tax Funding Program.

Those interested in submitting an application must be a non-profit 501(c) organization that owns or fully maintains tourism-related facilities or attractions in the county.

Officials say they had allocated $446,692 in state accommodations tax funds and held an application period earlier this year, but they still have $154,089 remaining that they want to be able to provide to local nonprofits.

If an organization is awarded funding, officials say that money must be used on costs incurred from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025.

Charleston County Council member Jenny Costa Honeycutt said that she is hoping all eligible organizations will get the chance to apply this time.

“These are monies specifically set aside to help promote our tourism industry and so for those partners that provide tourism services to the public, we want them to be able to use these resources to help maintain, operate and spruce up their facilities,” Honeycutt said.

Honeycutt said they will review what each organization is requesting funding for and then the amount awarded will be based on those needs.

She said that the applications will be reviewed by the state accommodations tax committee before going to the county council for approval.

The deadline to apply for this program is Dec. 13th. If you’re interested in applying you can find more information on the Charleston County website.
