Asheville – In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, two stalwarts of the Asheville community, Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity and MANNA FoodBank, have forged a partnership that exemplifies resilience and collaboration. Both organizations faced significant challenges when the hurricane struck in late September, damaging their facilities and disrupting their operations. However, rather than retreating into their individual struggles, they have come together to enhance their support for the community during this critical recovery period.

Strengthening Community Support Through Collaboration

The partnership between MANNA and Habitat for Humanity has proven to be a lifeline for many families in the region. By pooling resources and expertise, the two nonprofits have maximized their efficiency and impact. “This partnership has significantly strengthened community support during the recovery process,” said Micah Chrisman, Director of Marketing & Communications at MANNA FoodBank. “Collaborative efforts have reinforced community bonds and increased visibility, allowing us to share challenges and foster innovation.”

The immediate response to the hurricane saw staff from Habitat stepping in to assist MANNA informally. As the situation evolved, it became clear that a more structured collaboration was necessary. In mid-October, the two organizations formalized their partnership, allowing Habitat’s ReStore staff to work at MANNA’s new warehouse through mid-January 2025. This arrangement not only helps MANNA meet the increased demand for food assistance but also ensures that Habitat’s workforce remains engaged and productive during a time of uncertainty.

Roles and Responsibilities: Habitat Staff at MANNA

Habitat’s ReStore staff have taken on various roles within MANNA, contributing significantly to its operations. They are involved in order picking for agencies, assisting volunteers in the volunteer center, and supporting MANNA Pack deliveries and Mobile Community Markets. This collaboration has been warmly received by the MANNA team, who have quickly integrated the ReStore staff into their operations.

“The ReStore staff have been welcomed warmly by the MANNA team and have quickly become integral members of the organization,” Chrisman noted. Their dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed, as both MANNA staff and volunteers appreciate the additional support during this challenging time.

Long-Term Impacts of the Partnership

Looking ahead, both organizations are optimistic about the long-term impacts of their partnership. “Partnerships like this make non-profits more resilient in times of crisis,” said Andy Barnett, CEO of Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity. By sharing resources and expertise, both organizations can streamline operations and strengthen community relationships.

The collaboration is expected to expand their reach and address a wider range of community needs. As Chrisman pointed out, “Collaborative efforts can expand reach and impact a wider range of community needs.” This partnership not only addresses immediate concerns but also lays the groundwork for future collaborations that can enhance community trust and resilience.

Ultimately, this partnership serves as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when organizations unite for a common cause. By working together, Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity and MANNA FoodBank are not only helping their communities recover from Hurricane Helene but are also setting a precedent for future collaborations that can lead to a more resilient and equitable community.
