Non-profits serve the community from Give to the Max Day donations
ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Give to the Max Day on Nov. 21 is a statewide Minnestoa event that began in 2009 and has raised more $350 million in donations for non-profits over the course of 16 years.
Give MN is a St. Paul non-profit organization that created the so-called holiday for communities to support non-profit organizations and kick off the season of giving.
Give MN Deputy Executive Director Jenna Ray said organizations see nearly 20% of earnings at the year’s end.
“Well Give to the Max is Minnesota’s Holiday and Give MN really exists to host the party,” Ray said.
Ray mentioned each donation a non-profit receives is entered into a random drawing for $500 every 15 minutes, $1000 every hour and $10,000 golden ticket prizes.
Ray said southeastern Minnestoa has some of the highest donation rates.
“When we look at the numbers and we look at the participation of folks who are giving on Give to the Max Day, your region has a really generous population of folks,” Ray commented.
Development Director for The Landing MN in downtown Rochester Jamie Bingner said the non-profit uses donations to help people struggling with addiction and homelessness.
“This is an opportunity, especially for those who’ve never made a donation before, to double their impact,” Bingner claimed.
Bingner added the non-profit’s goal was to secure a $30,000 total alongside a $15,000 match.
“Any donation, whether it be $5, $100, $1,000, up to $15,000 will be matched dollar for dollar,” Bingner said.
Jeannie Thompson with the Women’s Shelter and Support Center said providing shelter in ten counties for domestic abuse victims is only a third of what the non-profit does for the community.
“We provide a 24-hour crisis line where people can call in and get immediate answers to their situation, referrals, resources, all of those types of things,” Thompson said. “We assist with protective orders.”
Director of Development for the shelter Barb Scharmm mentioned the organization’s goal for Thursday was $10,000.
“Our biggest thing is, that the more donations that come in, the more chances we have of winning up to $10,000 for the shelter.”
As of 9 p.m. on Thursday, The Landing MN has raised $31,000 and the Women’s Shelter and Support Center has reached $8,000 in donations.
The top three organizations from today’s donations will win a $10,000 golden tick prize Friday at midnight.
