Chippewa Valley non-profits that help the homeless concerned as days grow colder
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – There is concern among non-profits that help the homeless in the Chippewa Valley as days grow colder.
This is something on the minds of those like Katie Hulbert, who work with the homeless directly.
“When they do come in and we can’t provide that service right away that we sometimes have to send them away to other organizations and it’s hard for them to get there,” said Hulbert. “It’s kind of a chase around to get what they need. The frustration level for them gets even high and it’s difficult for us because we know that they’re going to be chasing those services.”
In partnership with Hope Gospel Mission, Western Dairyland is working to expand on the Community Haven House, which is a day resource center the homeless can turn to if they need somewhere to turn to during the day.
Right now, it is temporarily located off Farwell Street on Washington Street.
“We’re really trying to do the best that we can for those out there. We do recognize that this time of year it’s so hard for everybody. Frustrations are high and they need to get out of the cold. We’re really working towards providing what they need,” said Hulbert.
Finding affordable housing is among some of the services Western Dairyland offers, as well help with emergency shelter.
The rise in the homeless population in Eau Claire is something that concerns Hurlbert. Funds are limited and by extension so are services offered, according to Hurlbert.
In Chippewa County, Hope Village is one of a rare few non-profits, if not the only, that offers shelter for families.
All eleven tiny homes are in use at the moment, but each family is given help with finding an affordable place to live in 140 days.
A rise in the homeless population in Chippewa County is also seen by Mike Cohoon, which is concerning to him.
There is affordable housing through Hope Village in the works, but it could be until the early spring before it is ready to use said Cohoon.
In Eau Claire, an option the homeless turn to is the Sojourner House. However, not every one that waits in line is guaranteed a bed as they are limited.
