Parliament, Wednesday, 20 November 2024 – The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Social Development, Ms Bridget Masango, welcomes the Johannesburg High Court Order instructing the Gauteng Department of Social Development (DSD) to resolve funding challenges of non-profit organisations (NPOs).
The Gauteng DSD was litigated by the Gauteng Care Crisis Committee, a voluntary association representing non-profit organisations. This was in the aftermath of the decision taken by the 6th Administration to terminate funding of some NPOs that resulting in some of them closing their doors to the detriment of service users.
There were also delays in disbursing funds to the NPOs in the 2024/2025 financial year. The department has been ordered by the court to resolve the matter within the next three weeks.
The Chairperson called on the National Treasury last week to consider additional funding for the Gauteng-based NPOs after the Gauteng Provincial Government’s MEC for Social Development, Faith Mazibuko, informed the committee that the provincial department was hoping to receive additional funding from the adjusted budget to pay new compliant NPOs. The committee was pleased to note that a majority of the affected NPOs had been paid and it urged the department to speedily resolve the funding challenges experienced by the remaining NPOs.
The Chairperson reiterates the position of the committee that the MEC should ensure that the remaining NPOs are funded for the benefit of the beneficiaries of their services.
