UT a Top University for Entrepreneurship

The University of Texas at Austin’s entrepreneurship programs rank No. 2 for undergraduates and No. 7 for graduates, according to the Princeton Review and Entrepreneur magazine.

The rankings are based on a survey of administrators at nearly 300 schools offering entrepreneurship studies in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Europe. They considered more than 40 measures, including academic offerings, faculty credentials, mentorship and experiential learning opportunities and alumni entrepreneurship ventures.

“We’re seeing more and more students come to UT already having this mindset of being an entrepreneur, whether they want to end up working in a company or starting their own thing,” President Jay Hartzell said in his State of the University Address in September. “About a quarter of this year’s freshman class came in having already started a company, an organization or a nonprofit. . . Students are coming to us with that kind of energy, and we’ve got incredible programs already helping tap into that spread out across the campus.”

Among those programs are the Innovation, Creativity & Entrepreneurship Bridging Disciplines Program, GAMMA Program, the Social Entrepreneurship & Non-Profits Bridging Disciplines Program. The McCombs School of Business houses the Harkey Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, and the Cockrell School of Engineering hosts Texas Momentum.

Other startup centers include Blackstone LaunchPad and Texas Venture Labs. The Kendra Scott Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute helps cultivate women-owned and women-led businesses among students across the University. And Longhorn Startup is led by internet pioneer and professor emeritus Bob Metcalfe.

The McCombs School of Business also offers a minor in entrepreneurship.
