Texoma FC hosts first annual community soccer tournament
SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) – On a windy Saturday in Sherman, Texoma FC hosted its first annual community soccer tournament.
“The kids are having so much fun,” Brennan Robinson, Texoma FC’s Director of Operations, said. “This isn’t a tournament that’s a cutthroat, die hard, we’re trying to win at all costs tournament, this is a tournament to enjoy yourself.”
Texoma FC partnered with 3v3 Live to host the tournament, which drew in players from across Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana.
This first year focused on growth of the next generation of players — with brackets for academy age players up to U14.
“We want the five year old kids who are soccer fans to dream and say hey, I want to play professionally,” Robinson said. “So things like this really help start kids’ love for the game.”
And Robinson hopes to expand the tournament next year and introduce adult brackets, with a plan to shift the date to the summertime.
“I assume that next year, this will double or triple,” he said. “We want the community of Texoma to really grab ahold of this and look forward to this every year.”
The tournament is part of Texoma FC’s overall outreach plan.
“One of our core pillars is community,” Robison said. “So whenever we can, we try to create soccer focused events for families and kids.”
And the club has another community-focused event coming up soon: a toy drive.
On Sunday, December 15, Texoma FC will host a player combine, and the community is invited to come watch.
The cost? One stuffed animal for the toy drive.
“All the stuffed animals will be given to multiple non-profits in Grayson County,” he said.
In the meantime, Robinson said Texoma FC will keep working towards the start of its first official season, one day at a time.
“We’re just having a great time playing the game that we love,” he said.
