Asheville non-profit continues aid, braces for long recovery
PIEDMONT TRIAD — Organizations and non-profits have not stopped contributing to Hurricane Helene relief efforts. Grocery retailer Food Lion donated nearly four million dollars to the cause today. Major corporations such as USAA, Target, and PepsiCo have also donated millions to aid Helene victims. Governor Cooper announced today that more than 14 million has been donated to victims by more than two dozen organizations.
Yet, many remain in need of everyday necessities. Asheville-based non-profit Elben Charities staff member Kathy Soule says the community’s recovery will continue.
“We are moving forward, but it is going to be a long haul. It’s not something we’re going to fix in the next 3 months, 6 months, it could be a year to two years to get everybody back on their feet again,” Soule said.
With the holiday season approaching, they still hope to bring joy despite the current circumstances.
“We’ve always had the Saint Nicholas project, where we create a toy store for low-income families to shop for free for their children for the holidays,” Soule said.
