How Charity Ekezie is challenging stereotypes to drive social change with TikTok

In a world where digital media platforms are often seen as spaces only for entertainment, they are also proving to be powerful tools for social impact. One such initiative, TikTok’s Global Change Makers Programme, is empowering creators and NGOs to address important issues across Africa using the platform.

An integral part of the TikTok Change Makers Programme is its Change Makers Grant, with over $1 million allocated to support more than 30 global and local non-profits working on essential causes. As part of this initiative, TikTok will honour Nigerian creator Charity Ekezie, celebrated for her work challenging African stereotypes, by donating $25,000 to her NGO partner, Paradigm Initiative. This Nigerian non-profit is dedicated to promoting digital rights and inclusion, and the grant will further amplify its impact across the continent.

Charity Ekezie: Changing the Narrative with Wit and Heart

When Charity Ekezie first joined TikTok, she quickly realised the extent of the misconceptions people had about Africa. “I never realised there were so many negative misconceptions about Africa until I joined this platform,” she recalls. From the idea that Africans live in trees to assumptions about basic resources, Charity was overwhelmed with questions that revealed a lack of understanding about the continent. Rather than simply dismissing these comments, she turned to witty humour to educate her community and challenge stereotypes.

One of the global stereotypes Charity aims to challenge is the misconception that Africa is a single country, rather than a continent made up of numerous nations, each with its own unique heritage. A standout example of Charity’s work is a TikTok video where she wore clothing representing different tribes from various African countries. The post resonated with viewers worldwide, sparking meaningful conversations about Africa’s diversity and cultures. “That video was seen as thoughtful and powerful, sharing Africa’s beauty with the world,” Charity says. Her TikTok profile now serves as a platform for cultural appreciation, inviting millions of people to discover the vibrant and multifaceted reality of Africa.

Paradigm Initiative: Bridging Africa’s Digital Divide

While Charity focuses on challenging misconceptions, Paradigm Initiative addresses a critical issue impacting young Africans—access to digital rights and literacy. For over a decade, this Nigerian NGO has been providing digital, financial, and business skills to young people in underserved communities through its LIFE Legacy programme. Now, with the support of the TikTok Global Change Makers Programme, Paradigm Initiative is expanding its reach across 13 African countries, helping more youth access digital opportunities.

“While there is a wealth of research being conducted on digital rights, the challenge is breaking down this information into digestible, bite-sized content that resonates with the youth, who dominate these platforms,” explains Adeboye Adegoke, Senior Manager, Grants & Programs Strategy, Paradigm Initiative. Through videos and short films, the NGO educates young Africans on their digital rights, simplifying complex issues and delivering content that is both relatable and impactful.

A Collaboration for Change: Charity and Paradigm Initiative Unite

What makes the collaboration between Charity and Paradigm Initiative so compelling is how their missions align. Charity’s global influence and witty content bring attention to Paradigm Initiative’s work, amplifying the message of digital inclusion. Together, they plan to showcase success stories from Paradigm Initiative’s LIFE Legacy programme, using digital media to highlight the transformative impact digital literacy can have on African youth.

“We hope to work with Charity to create content that not only shows the impact of our work but also attracts donations and resources to amplify that impact,” shares Paradigm Initiative. Charity’s ability to connect with a global audience allows her to bring visibility to these issues, driving conversations around digital inclusion and empowering young Africans to harness the opportunities that come with it. By uniting their strengths, they are setting an example of how creators and NGOs can collaborate to achieve greater impact.

The Power of Collaboration

The TikTok Global Change Makers Programme is an innovative initiative that aims to support TikTok content creators and NGOs dedicated to social impact. The programme provides resources to creators passionate about making a difference in their communities, while also partnering them with mission-driven non-profit organisations. The initiative enables creators and NGOs to join forces, leveraging each other’s strengths to maximise their reach and impact. For Charity and Paradigm Initiative, this programme has allowed them to elevate their respective causes and work together to amplify their messages of change.

“We see significant potential in using digital platforms for policy advocacy,” says Paradigm Initiative. “These platforms present an opportunity to promote digital inclusion and engage policymakers and influencers in conversations around digital rights.” As both Charity and Paradigm Initiative continue their work, it’s clear that this programme is helping to reshape the narrative about Africa and its people.

Looking Forward: A New Era for Digital Advocacy in Africa

Looking to the future, both Charity and Paradigm Initiative are driven by ambitious goals. Charity dreams of travelling across Africa to share its diverse cultures and landscapes with her global followers. “My goal is to ensure the message reaches every person who is ignorant about Africa,” she says. Meanwhile, Paradigm Initiative plans to expand its digital literacy programmes even further, ensuring that more young Africans can access the tools and knowledge necessary to thrive in the digital world.

Their partnership is a powerful reminder that collaboration between TikTok creators and NGOs can drive meaningful change. By combining Charity’s engaging content with Paradigm Initiative’s dedication to bridging the digital divide, they are helping to build a brighter future for Africa’s youth. The Global Change Makers Programme has shown that, when used effectively, TikTok can be a force for good—one that fosters understanding, empowers communities, and inspires action.
